Bret started shooting at the age of 10, with a little help from his father. Bret grew up shooting with his father and brother, and is currently raising a son who shoots as well. Bret graduated from Midland College in 1982 with a degree in Business Administration. He retired from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) in 2005 and currently runs the Willawalla Creek Shooting Center where he spends most of his time coaching, developing juniors and working with the local 4-H.

Bret is a six-time National Champion and has been on the National Team since 1984. In 1998, Bret's father passed away during the world team selection. Despite that, Bret made the team in Men's Double Trap, but lost his desire to shoot, so he retired in 1999. In 2001, he made a comeback and made not only made the world team, but won a Silver medal. In 2004, Bret made the Olympic Team, but five weeks before the Olympics, Bret's heart stopped during a run with his teammates. His teammates were able to get his heart going again and the doctors installed a pacemaker. Four weeks later, he shot in the Olympics in Athens.
