SHOOTING: Beyerle Remains on Top, Sandra Fong is in Second Place at 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Shooting (Smallbore)

FT. BENNING, Ga. (May 21, 2008)-For the second day in a row, Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.) is holding the lead in the Women's 3-Position competition at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Shooting (Smallbore), while Sandra Fong (New York, N.Y.) jumped up into second place. There are two Olympic spots available to the U.S. in Women's 3-Position Rifle. Beyerle, the 2007 Pan American Games gold medalist, is on top once again with a total score of 1370.0. Sandra Fong moved up into the second spot today with an overall score 1355.9 points. Fong's older sister Abigail Fong (New York, N.Y.) is holding third place with 1351.3 points. Amanda Furrer (Spokane, Wash.), the 2007 Pan American Games bronze medalist, continues to hold fourth place with a score of 1345.2. Amy Sowash (Richmond, Ky.) and Taylor Beard (Parker, Colo.) remain in fifth and sixth places with scores of 1342.3 and 1325.5 respectively. The 2008 U.S. Olympic Team members for Women's 3-Position Rifle will be determined on Thursday. Over 170 top rifle and pistol shooters from around the United States are competing for spots on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Shooting (Smallbore) May 12-22 at Ft. Benning's International Shooting Complex in Columbus, Ga., home of the USAMU. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Shooting is a collaborative partnership between the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and USA Shooting. The rifle/pistol athletes are being selected to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team based on a combination of the three days of match scores, plus each athlete's top two finals scores.
